How to get The Rockabilly Look

Rockabilly is all about showing off your feminity, glamour and attitude through classic 50’s inspired fashion! With bold colours, prints and patterns at the forefront of the style, rockabilly is all about letting your personality shine, with an all-important dash of rock and roll. At Hell Bunny, we love all things rockabilly, from stand-out 50’s swing dresses to figure-hugging high-waist capris and cute blouses.

If you want to add some 50s style to your wardrobe this season, we’ve got you covered. From the must-have wardrobe essentials to styling tips, we’ll have you ready to hit the diner for a shake in no time at all.

How to dress rockabilly

With rockabilly styling, it’s all about the neckline. Step away from the spaghetti straps and look for tops or dresses that offer a halter or sweetheart neckline. The thick straps of a halterneck will offer support and give you that classic ‘flash of shoulders’ look whereas the cute cut of a sweetheart neckline with ruching at the bust is perfect for day-to-day 50’s glam.

A high-waist is another rockabilly staple, whether it’s denim jeans, capris or pencil skirts. For a casual look, pair high-waist pants with your favourite rockabilly print top or a checked shirt with a knot tied in the front. If you’re looking for a knockout rockabilly evening look, a high-waist pencil skirt paired with a halterneck and cardigan will give you that effortless 50’s glamour you’re craving.

We can’t talk about rockabilly style with mentioning the classic swing skirt. Who doesn’t love the ‘swish swish’ feeling of wearing one of the most flattering styles of the 1950’s? A full skirt is a must in any wardrobe and is perfect for hitting the dancefloor or sashaying through the bar to meet your girls. A 50’s swing dress or skirt in a bold print is a fantastic choice for any occasion, look for a full skirt, a fitted waist and either slightly puffed or halter style sleeves.

How to style rockabilly patterns

When it comes to rockabilly prints and patterns, the bolder the better! We love the classics; from vintage tattoo prints to cherries, gingham, leopard print and polka dot, or even a classic block colour with a contrasting belt. If you’re going for a statement print, the key is to keep your accessories to the same colour palette. For instance, a cherry print dress looks incredible with a red hair scarf, bold red pumps and of course, a slick of red lipstick!

What shoes are rockabilly?

Speaking of shoes, to nail the rockabilly vibe you should make sure your 50s fashion goes all the way down to your toes! If you love wearing heels, a pair of Mary Janes will see you through many occasions, from the office to the dancefloor. A pair of wedges is also a great addition to any rockabilly wardrobe and look great paired with your favourite crop trousers. If you prefer flats, invest in some loafers or high-tops for a preppy, casual look.

Rockabilly accessories

The finishing touches to any rockabilly outfit are the accessories, put your own personal stamp on your look with statement necklaces in classic tattoo-inspired designs. Swallows, anchors, cherries and even pin-up girls are all great picks when searching for rockabilly accessories. Headscarves and headbands will keep you looking fresh whatever the weather, perfect for those days where you can’t face more dry-shampoo!

Rockabilly hairstyles

Classic rockabilly hairstyles take practice but in time you will be rocking the victory rolls, just like Betty Page! Although this is more of a 1940’s style, victory rolls were adopted by rockabilly girls in the 50s and it continues to be a popular look today. Take a look at online tutorials to watch how to master the style. For a rockabilly hairstyle with less ‘fuss’, go for soft barrel curls with bangs or a high ponytail finished with your favourite headscarf.

1950s makeup ideas

Rockabilly makeup is very distinctive and is easy to nail in just a few steps. Keep your base fresh and clean with a liquid foundation and a small amount of blush on the apples of your cheeks. The eyes really do have it when it comes to 50s makeup and a cat eye is a definite MUST. Once you have your wings, add a couple of coats of mascara or a pair of false lashes before adding that final slick of red lipstick. We recommend lining your lips in red lip-liner to define your cupid’s bow before adding your colour.
